The Mating Game by Lana Ferguson

The second installment in Lana Ferguson’s Omegaverse romance series, as I call it, hits the mark! It’s hot, funny, and very endearing. For an Alpha, Hunter is such a cinnamon roll of a hero. He and Tess don’t get off on the right foot, but the attraction is immediate. Seeing them navigate their professional relationship while dealing with natural instincts is entertaining and balanced so well. Lana does an excellent job at maintaining boundaries in situations where it would seem impossible. I knew, having loved The Fake Mate, I would enjoy being back in this world, but I underestimated how much. I loved Mackenzie and Noah’s appearances and cameos in the story. It felt like visiting old friends. I really hope there are more Omegaverse romances to come, because they’re quickly becoming my favorites of Lana’s books to read!

Violet Thistlewaite Is Not a Villain Anymore by Emily Krempholtz

I love everything about this book. From the title to the blurb, to the story and characters, Violet Thistlewaite Is Not a Villain Anymore was exactly what I was hoping it would be- a story I couldn’t wait to pick up and fall into. It’s cozy, adorable, and just the right amount of sweet and spicy. My favorite is the theme of redemption and finding out who you are and what you want. Emily Krempholttz debut had me falling for Violet and Nathaniel, along with Dragon’s Rest. I want more murderous plants, small town, magic, and rock goblins. Take me back to Dragon’s Rest for more adventures! Emily Krempholtz’s Violet Thistlewaite Is Not a Villain Anymore is the perfect fall/winter read to binge!

Pitcher Perfect by Tessa Bailey

This may well be my favorite Big Shots book in the series. I loved seeing Robbie go from an unlikable guy to one who was so gone on Skylar, he realized he needed to be better, not for her, but for himself. This may be the slowest burn of all of Tessa’s books, but it’s so worth it getting to that point. Skylar and Robbie don’t hold back when following along with Skylar’s plans to “learn” how to be comfortable with a guy she’s interested in. I also loved how much Skylar and Robbie hyped each other up and took care of each other. I am hoping Elton and his best friend get a book. Maybe even Mailer too.

Love Is a War Song by Danica Nava

I spent the last 30 minutes of reading Love Is a War Song in tears. They were very emotional tears- sad, and then happy, but I found the story so moving, I didn’t even realize I was actively crying. Avery Fox’s journey to finding herself, what mattered to her, and happiness really touched me. I loved how intricate Love Is a War Song is. The story isn’t just about Avery, but it’s also about Lucas Iron Eyes, Lottie (Avery’s grandmother), and those who also live on the ranch. Danica Nava’s sophomore novel is incredible. I couldn’t put it down and I really resonated with the themes of identity and family, among others. I’m so impressed Danica actually wrote a song to go in the book and I can’t wait to hear it be played. I loved every minute of reading Love Is a War Song. I need more cowboy romances like this one, ones that showcase the myriad experiences and peoples who live this life daily. Love Is a War Song is real, in ways you wouldn’t expect from a celebrity-cowboy romance, and I love it all the more for it.

The Irresistible Urge to Fall for Your Enemy by Brigitte Knightley

I somehow have to figure out a way to live with myself and the desire to read the next book in this duology. The urgency to find out what happens next is already clawing at me. Brigette Knightley is my newest shero. I love everything that makes The Irresistible Urge to Fall for Your Enemy, just that- irresistible. It’s so funny and smart. I tried unsuccessfully to smother my laughter while in public waiting rooms, doctor offices, and any place I could read. Knightley credits a number of literary stars for inspiring them, and it showed especially in the word choices. In particular, the language Osric and Aurienne use to skewer each other with every verbal exchange. There were words I had to immediately look up the definition for, making the reading experience richer. Each word was well picked and placed. When I started reading, I had no hope of anything developing between Osric and Aurienne. At the end of this book, I want nothing more than to remove everything keeping them apart. If you’re looking for something that will live in your head rent-free once you’re finished, then this book is for you. It’s a delicious slow burn that will have you falling for the characters, kicking your heels with delight, and turning the pages as fast as you can.

Dark Restraint by Katee Robert

It’s a given you’re going to get grade-A smut when you read a Katee Robert novel. Ariadne and Asterion are candy for anyone who loves the forbidden romance trope. Seeing how he is soft for only her made me melt. I loved seeing them find a way to leave behind what was holding them captive and bound, and trust each other. I’ve loved every story in this series, but there’s something about Dark Restraint that I feel brings the plot to bring down Olympus into super clear focus. I feel like I can see the end, but knowing Robert I’m expecting some serious twists. Case and point, Hera really surprised in this installment of Dark Olympus.

Becoming Ted by Matt Cain

If you’re a fan of TJ Klune’s cozy queer fantasy books, you’ll love Matt Cain’s cozy contemporary queer stories! I’d compare the vibes of Becoming Ted to those of The House in the Cerulean Sea, but with older characters. This story is not just about Ted discovering who he is in the wake of a separation but also that of his friends and his new love interest. Becoming Ted is truly a journey for all the characters, and I loved reading about people who are discovering new things about themselves later in life and evolving; which is my favorite part of the book. It truly goes to show you can always start anew at any time! Matt Cain’s writing is heartfelt and touching, and I can’t wait to share this book with my friends and everyone else I know!

Just Some Stupid Love Story by Katelyn Doyle

Just Some Stupid Love Story by Katelyn Doyle is an epic saga romance between two people who have been it for each other since they were young, but things have never been right. Two people with very different approaches to love, screenwriter Molly and divorce lawyer Seth, kept me turning page after page in this steamy second-chance romance with snappy dialog. It might be my favorite read this month and for sure is to be one everyone is talking about this summer!

Playing Flirty by Shameez Patel

Shameez Patel’s debut is a delight. I found myself unable to put the book down and reading it at red lights when I could just to get in a few more words. I really enjoyed the sparks between Rose and William- both as competitors and as potential love interests. I am someone who likes her books spicy but I didn’t mind too much that it was more steam than spice. Playing Flirty has multiple story arcs and Shameez, for the most part, manages to balance them really well. I am really looking forward to reading more from Shameez Patel!

Raiders of the Lost Heart by Jo Segura

A December Read This Next! Title

This is the romance I’ve been yearning for, one that fills all my needs for a romance novel version of Romancing the Stone, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, and Indiana Jones. The story features a whip-smart and capable female archeologist Dr. Socorro “Corrie” Mejía who ends up on a dig that could be the find of a lifetime and ends up being forced to finally deal with the one man she hates the most- Dr. Ford Matthews. What could’ve been haunts her, and him too. Unrequited lust/love definitely builds the tension between them to dizzying heights, and makes when they finally give in to their feelings so satisfying.I was surprised by and enjoyed the suspense subplot. Made for a very unexpected and surprising plot twists. The ending itself was ambiguous, but the epilogue more than made up for it! Jo Segura’s debut novel is exciting and a wonderful new addition. I am eager to see what she writes next!

Emily Wilde’s Encyclopaedia of Faeries by Heather Fawcett

This book is such an unexpected delight! It’s told in an epistolary style- journal entries, with you, the reader, being an outside observer to events that have already happened. However, Heather Fawcett’s style of writing is such that it seamlessly blends with the narrative and you forget entirely that you’re reading a journal! It’s cozy, heart-warming, absolutely page-turning, and will leave you both satisfied and wanting more. It’s unique, enchanting, and one of my favorite reads of this year, perfect for anyone who loves fantasy and especially the fae!
