Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli

I really loved Simon’s voice, but I loved all of the characters and truly wish that there were more folks like Simon’s group of friends and supporters. Becky Albertalli has given us a beautiful coming-of-age story that leaves the reader with much to think about. Through the voices of her characters, she has done a fine job of pointing out the many outdated prejudices and assumptions still held by too many in today’s world and how unfair and unnecessary they are. I have long believed that it will be the current generation that will finally achieve the change that we need and allow issues of sexual identity to become a thing of the past, and this book and these wonderful characters give voice to many insights that are spot on. Absolutely everyone should read this book!

Honey Bee Mine by Sarah T. Dubb

Sarah T. Dubb’s sophomore novel, Honey Bee Mine is a contemporary romance between a small-town beekeeper and a reformed bad boy who returns home after his grandfather’s death. Thirty-four-year-old Penny Becker has been obsessed with bees since childhood. After her father abandoned her mother, Ruth, upon learning she was pregnant, Penny became determined never to be a burden or an obligation. When her boyfriend, Henry, convinces her to leverage Becker Farms for a capital-gains venture that ultimately fails, Penny is left with just two months to earn enough money to cover her debts, or risk the bank seizing her thirty-eight-acre farm.Thirty-five-year-old Zander Bouras has loathed Sullivan’s Glen ever since his addict mother dropped him there every summer so she could get high, leaving him in his grandfather’s care. Known as the town’s bad boy, Zander rejected his grandfather’s guidance, constantly testing the limits of both the school and the community before fleeing town with his pregnant girlfriend, Mallory. Now a successful restaurateur, Zander returns following his grandfather’s death with his ex-wife, Mallory, her girlfriend Quinn, who also happens to be Zander’s best friend, and their eleven-year-old son, Winter. His plan is simple: renovate the house, sell it, and return to Boston once the summer ends.Everything changes when Zander encounters “Perfect Penny,” the girl next door his grandfather idolized and held up as an example of everything Zander was not. She seemed to have the perfect family and the town’s unwavering affection. But when Winter asks for a bee tour of Penny’s farm and Zander learns that Penny also grew up without a father, he realizes how flawed his assumptions about her truly were.Determined to save her farm for another year, Penny plans to revive Sullivan’s Glen’s annual Honey Festival. Thanks to her RJ and Winter, Zander volunteers to help. As the two work together, they must learn to trust each other and dismantle years of misconceptions, not only to ensure the festival’s success, but also while knowing that any relationship between them has an expiration date, as Zander intends to return to Boston once the summer ends. Dubb’s sophomore novel is a classic contemporary romance that notably avoids both miscommunication tropes and a third-act breakup. She grounds the story in realistic conflicts and enriches it with a diverse supporting cast, including a trans and ace side character, a sapphic relationship, and a mixed-race couple. Penny’s ex never appears as a traditional villain, which is a refreshing deviation from genre expectations. However, the antagonism between Penny and Zander dissipates quickly, shifting most of the tension toward saving the farm and Penny’s reluctance to share the extent of her financial troubles. Honey Bee Mine is sweet, much like its title, though Dubb’s debut novel ultimately remains the stronger work.

And Now, Back to You by B.K. Borison

BK does it again in this follow-up to First Time Caller – a funny, tender story of two meteorologists with very different styles who find themselves reporting on a big winter storm together. The way Borison draws them towards each other is my favorite part, like it is in all of her books – a real, messy, thoughtful unfurling. And Now, Back to You is a beautiful love story where two people really SEE each other, and are able to step into their best light because they shine it on one another first. If you have a detailed power ranking of 90s Meg Ryan romcom roles, if you love a strong forearm, Swedish Fish, and passive-aggressive Post-It Notes – this one is for you.

Fake Skating by Lynn Painter

If you love a good “fake dating” story, you’ll be completely swept away by this charming new romance. Dani and Alec were inseparable as kids, but when Dani returns to her Minnesota hometown, she finds the nerdy boy she remembers has been replaced by the town’s hockey star. When they are forced to pretend to be a couple, their complicated charade leads to some truly swoon-worthy moments. This book perfectly captures the awkwardness and excitement of first love, proving that even in a town where hockey is king, a little romance can still take center ice.

The Mating Game by Lana Ferguson

The second installment in Lana Ferguson’s Omegaverse romance series, as I call it, hits the mark! It’s hot, funny, and very endearing. For an Alpha, Hunter is such a cinnamon roll of a hero. He and Tess don’t get off on the right foot, but the attraction is immediate. Seeing them navigate their professional relationship while dealing with natural instincts is entertaining and balanced so well. Lana does an excellent job at maintaining boundaries in situations where it would seem impossible. I knew, having loved The Fake Mate, I would enjoy being back in this world, but I underestimated how much. I loved Mackenzie and Noah’s appearances and cameos in the story. It felt like visiting old friends. I really hope there are more Omegaverse romances to come, because they’re quickly becoming my favorites of Lana’s books to read!

Daddy Issues by Kate Goldbeck

Daddy Issues is an Ali-Hazelwood grade (said with unabashed reverence) age-gap romance that has it all—a real, messy protagonist, a hot, dedicated single dad next door, riveting professional stakes, unexpected info about a niche subject (comics), and meaningful, believable resolution and character growth through the book—a romcom that also has steaming hot “driving lessons” in a Chili’s parking lot! What more do you want? The girls who get it NEED TO GET THIS.

Female Fantasy by Iman Hariri-Kia

This book is a love letter to those who get dogged on for liking romance! The mixing of fanfiction and the contemporary romance novel was so much fun and felt super unique. You get to see two storylines that played very well into one another to aid Joonie in her growth, both personally and romantically. I really appreciated how Joonie stood up for the romance genre and explained how anyone can learn a lot about self-discovery, strength, and resilience from romance novels. Hearing about Joonie’s upbringing and how she never felt she fit in—fair, as she was forced to assimilate into a white world when so many aspects of that world promoted the downfall of her culture and confidence—was eye-opening and made me root for her even more. Joonie was a champion of building her own confidence even when everyone else was laughing. That’s the kind of female stories I want. Strength, humor, fortitude, all the while remaining soft. The side characters (including the love interest and fanfiction characters) were so fun and flowed so well with Joonie. Leaving nothing to feel forced, this writing was fun, witty, and full of big emotions that drove the story in unique and unexpected ways. With laugh-out-loud moments, feeling like you need to hug Joonie, and swooning over the typical book boyfriend, Hariri-Kia delivers a unique take on the romance genre, giving hugs to all those who constantly have to justify their love for it.

Pitcher Perfect by Tessa Bailey

This may well be my favorite Big Shots book in the series. I loved seeing Robbie go from an unlikable guy to one who was so gone on Skylar, he realized he needed to be better, not for her, but for himself. This may be the slowest burn of all of Tessa’s books, but it’s so worth it getting to that point. Skylar and Robbie don’t hold back when following along with Skylar’s plans to “learn” how to be comfortable with a guy she’s interested in. I also loved how much Skylar and Robbie hyped each other up and took care of each other. I am hoping Elton and his best friend get a book. Maybe even Mailer too.

Love Is a War Song by Danica Nava

I spent the last 30 minutes of reading Love Is a War Song in tears. They were very emotional tears- sad, and then happy, but I found the story so moving, I didn’t even realize I was actively crying. Avery Fox’s journey to finding herself, what mattered to her, and happiness really touched me. I loved how intricate Love Is a War Song is. The story isn’t just about Avery, but it’s also about Lucas Iron Eyes, Lottie (Avery’s grandmother), and those who also live on the ranch. Danica Nava’s sophomore novel is incredible. I couldn’t put it down and I really resonated with the themes of identity and family, among others. I’m so impressed Danica actually wrote a song to go in the book and I can’t wait to hear it be played. I loved every minute of reading Love Is a War Song. I need more cowboy romances like this one, ones that showcase the myriad experiences and peoples who live this life daily. Love Is a War Song is real, in ways you wouldn’t expect from a celebrity-cowboy romance, and I love it all the more for it.

Funny Story by Emily Henry

Emily Henry just GETS IT. She has the perfect recipe for a book that has just the right amount of humor, romance, and the kind of real-life hurdles that hit close to home. What sets this book apart are the characters, who are grappling with life’s ups and downs in a way that feels incredibly real. It’s the “just one more chapter” book that you’ll actually stay awake until 1 AM to finish. And hey, maybe I’m speaking from personal experience.

Worth Fighting For by Jesse Q. Sutanto

Mulan was a badass woman warrior in history, and Jesse Sutanto portrays that beautifully in this contemporary retelling. I have always loved the story of Mulan. That was then amplified when Disney made a movie about her. Sutanto does an amazing job of twisting the tale into a contemporary storyline without losing the original meaning and lessons from the original. In my opinion, you could not have found a better author to take on Mulan’s story and blow it out of the park.

Along Came Amor by Alexis Daria

I have never had such a sexy book hurt my feelings so much. As a Latina woman, Alexis Daria writes the most relatable characters, and it makes me love her stories even more. Ava is one of the best characters I have ever read. She is beautiful and wonderfully flawed that I knew from the beginning that she was my favorite prima. And Roman….. This man is 10/10 , the best, green flags all around, top tier. Heart-wrenching, relatable, and absolutely delicious, this was one of my favorite reads of the year.
