Make Believe by Mac Barnett

If any book should be required reading for booksellers, librarians, and educators, this is it. Abandon your preconceived notions of what children’s books should be, and let Mac Barnett remind you how magical they can be. This message comes at the perfect time and makes a lovely gift for people who want to spread the joy of reading to all ages.

Make Believe by Mac Barnett

When I say I’ll read anything that Mac has written, I’m usually only signing up for a fun-filled, ten-minute romp through a whimsical, ingeniously constructed picture book. How delightful to find that, when it comes to essays on children’s books, the recently appointed Ambassador For Young People’s Literature (complete with his own office in the Library of Congress, “conveniently located 2,808 miles from my home in Oakland, California!”), is just as whimsical and ingenious, as well as insightful and delightful. Kids’ books merit grown-up conversation,” MB tells us in the foreword, and goes on to prove it, by using words like ‘ineffable’ and ‘bromide’ and ‘liminal.’ Topics covered include: didacticism in children’s literature; how to connect with kids; and a wonderful dissection of Goodnight Moon, (a book which has always terrified and disturbed me, and at least now I know why!) Essential reading for lovers of kids, kids’ books, books, and all things wonderful.

Joyride by Susan Orlean

Aptly titled, this is a shimmering cruise through the ups and downs of Orlean’s writing career. Her love of writing shines through even in the cautionary tales. The appendix with several of her early pieces is a delightful bonus. If you love the behind-the-scenes world of writers, this is one for you.

1000 Words by Jami Attenberg

1000 Words is a guide for writers, but I think anyone interested in reading would truly enjoy this one. I loved the features from some of my favorite authors, and was especially touched by the tender exchange of letters between Jami Attenberg and Keise Laymon. This slim book packs a punch with thought-provoking questions that inspire creativity in writers and readers alike. Loved it!

Spine Poems by Annette Dauphin Simon

I love that the concept of this book seems so simple, but author and creator Annette Dauphin Simon turned it into something complex and spectacular. What fun it is to have these facts and quotes accompany the poems, especially with the beautifully composed photos. Spine Poems is funny, delightful, informative, and even touching at times. I can’t wait to put this book into the hands of every book lover I know!
