Beanie the Bansheenie by Eoin Colfer

Well, that was one of the most whimsical things I’ve read in a bit, which is saying something. Absolutely stunning art with a heartwarming story to match of a wee Bansheenie who, through happenstance, doesn’t truly bond with her human, and so shenanigans ensue. In the vein of fairy tales, this one deals with death and possibilities and love. More suitable for older children due to the more complex storyline and themes, but a feast for the eyes and ears.

Umami by Jacob Grant

Super cute picture book that introduces the five tastes — salty, sour, bitter, sweet, and umami! Umami the Penguin loves food and wants to liven up her continent’s diet of cold fish (ew). Her adventurousness is delightful, and I loved that this is such an unconventional take on a “getting kids to be more curious about food” theme. Plus, it’s just good fun!

Bye Forever, I Guess by Jodi Meadows

Being invisible and lonely is better than being seen and ridiculed, right? Warmth, caring, and cozy were all knit together to make this book. Middle school relationships are hard and are often made that much worse with miscommunication. Meadows handles it in a way that I think anyone can relate to and appreciate. Not to mention me giggling and kicking my feet at how sweet this romance is.

I loved the twists laced through this thrilling story. A mystery full of heart and at times deeply unsettling. Teenagers are messy, but they are wholly human with all the pain that often includes. This story takes them seriously in an important way giving voice to true loss and the devastation it can leave behind.

Spotlight On: Compound Fracture by Andrew Joseph White

ad

Andrew Joseph White, photo credit Alice Scott

Horror will always be the genre that feels the most like home to me, largely because it’s the only genre that will let me get away with the sort of stuff I want to write. It’s messy, and visceral, and gut-churning! (Plus, once you include a single horror element in, say, a romance novel, it becomes a horror-romance by definition; horror infects everything it touches, and isn’t that wonderful?)
–Andrew Joseph White, Interview, F(r)iction

Compound Fracture by Andrew Joseph White

What booksellers are saying about Compound Fracture

  • Andrew Joseph White has taken us to an eco-Christofascist apocalypse, a Victorian asylum full of spirits and mediums, and now an Appalachia haunted by blood feuds and class war. This is his most unputdownable book yet, a bloody tour-de-force, mining and queering West Virginia’s buried socialist history, with a lovable, neurodivergent, rage-fueled transboy at the center and a whole lot of gore all around him. Prepare to be hurt, haunted, and ultimately heartened.
― Megan Bell, Underground Books in Carrollton, Georgia | BUY

  • Another stunning read from Andrew Joseph White, this time set in Appalachian coal country. White does a masterful job of weaving the throughlines of generational trauma and rage that simmer, boil, and ultimately explode off the page. As always, the portrayal of trans characters is thoughtful and authentic – with important reminders that trans identity is not new. It is merely increasingly visible. The violence is, at time, shocking – but not gratuitous. The visceral descriptions are essential to the story being told. A great read.
― Kate Snyder, Plaid Elephant Books in Danville, Kentucky | BUY

  • Andrew Joseph White continues to deliver sharp, compelling writing with his third novel, Compound Fracture. There hasn’t been a novel from White that I haven’t loved– his previous two releases are equally phenomenal– but Compound Fracture has earned the spot of my favorite Andrew Joseph White book. Andrew Joseph White delivers an edge-of-your-seat thriller that will keep readers hooked until the final page. At the same time, White utilizes his characters to address the lasting impacts of trauma, poverty, and economic exploitation on both individuals and communities. Compound Fracture is equal parts blood-soaked and beautiful, a testament to the resiliency and power of community organization. This is easily my favorite book of 2024!
― Charlie Williams, Square Books in Oxford, Mississippi | BUY

  • Having loved The Spirit Bares its Teeth with my whole heart, I snatched this book as soon as the ARC came in and nearly devoured it, but I’m so glad I forced myself to take it slow. Just like his other two books, this is something to be savored and really taken in deeply as you read it. It’s a love letter of the most brutal, loud, and angry variety, and I love how raw this writing is. This time it’s for the working class fighting against those exploiting them for profit over centuries, and for Appalachia. It’s a story about doing whatever it takes to survive, about the strength of community and family and even more beneath the layers. Like his other work it’s unsetting, violent, and heartbreaking – though I think this is probably the lightest on the graphic violence – but there’s an undeniable ray of hope at the end that refuses to be diminished. I adore this story.

There hasn’t been a novel from White that I haven’t loved– his previous two releases are equally phenomenal– but Compound Fracture has earned the spot of my favorite Andrew Joseph White book. Spotlight On: Millie Fleur’s Poison Garden by Christy Mandin

Like many of my stories, Millie Fleur’s Poison Garden started with something I read about that made my brain light up – a real life poison garden in England! You see, I myself am wonderfully weird and a poison garden would’ve been just the kind of place I would’ve wanted to visit as a child. From a very early age I was multi-passionate, interested in all manner of things. But my unquenchable curiosity and varied interests often made me feel like I didn’t quite fit into any one box. And being curious and questioning sometimes put me at odds with the grown-ups in my life. I wasn’t satisfied with “because it’s always been that way” or “because I said so.” And I especially wasn’t interested in the words “you can’t.” In that way, Millie Fleur and I are alike.

Parachute Kids by Betty C. Tang

An honest take on the concept of a modern “parachute kid” phenomenon where children are left to study in the U.S. without their parents. An emotional story of a tight-knit family falling into near-despair as three middle-high school-aged kids are forced to look after themselves as their parents’ visas expire. A commentary on unreasonably slow immigration policies, forcing families apart, and growing up too young.

Spotlight On: Olivetti by Allie Millington

ad

Something that has shaped much of my writing is asking the question, “Who have we never heard a story from before?” There were many reasons why I chose to share a typewriter’s untold side of the story, one of them being because I thought typewriters would naturally have many stories to tell (as they’re full of them).

Countless people across history and across the world have a personal connection or fondness toward these charming, clacking machines — and yet, most kids have never had the opportunity to use one. One hope I have for Olivetti is that it can be a bridge between generations, and create opportunities for readers both young and old to share in the nostalgia and power of passing down memories that typewriters bring just by being themselves.

Olivetti by Allie Millington

What booksellers are saying about Olivetti

  • All About Olivetti! The beautiful cover art belies the beautiful story. Olivetti tells the story of a family missing connections and how they find their way to new, deeper relationships with each other. plus a magical vintage typewriter! What more could you ask for?!
― Susan Williams, M Judson, Booksellers in Greenville, South Carolina | BUY

  • I love this sweet, unique book! Young Ernest is shy and dealing with his family’s secrets doesn’t help. When Ernest’s mom drops off the family’s beloved typewriter Olivetti at the pawn shop and then disappears, the whole family is thrown into an emotional whirlwind. Ernest and Olivetti team up to find out where mom is and why she left. This story will steal your heart – I never expected to have such strong feelings about a sentient typewriter!
― Andrea Richardson, Fountain Bookstore in Richmond, Virginia | BUY

  • A wholly original and utterly charming middle grade novel that will hit you right in the feels. It’s a got a little bit of a mystery, a family that’s lost its way, and a plucky typewriter who breaks the rules of his kind trying to help.
― Melissa Taylor, E. Shaver, bookseller in Savannah, Georgia | BUY

  • I picked this book up for two reasons: the stunning cover and the comp to Jasmine Warga’s A Rover’s Story. No surprise that it was so well done. With a complex familial theme that pulls at your heart strings and an anthropomorphized typewriter that you wanted so badly to befriend, this book had me hooked. It felt like the hug you get from The Vanderbeekers meets the wonder that you experience reading A Rover’s Story.
― Olivia Schaffer, The Bookshelf in Thomasville, Georgia | BUY

  • Devoured in one sitting. I don’t know what I expected, but this beautiful book was not it. The kind of hope and heartbreak and love that gets you in the corners of your heart and makes you want to laugh and cry all at once.
― Lauren Brown, The Story Shop, LLC in Monroe, Georgia | BUY
