Parenthood & Children

Her Kind by Sophie Lefens

This is not my typical read, but I could not put it down. This is a beautiful story of found family mixed with “Practical Magic”. Ada and her son live with her aunt when Ada becomes plagued with visions of herself dying. With her aunt’s failing health, she invites her three best friends to come visit and stay with them to see who she could leave her son to if she dies. Relationship dynamics are tested, Ada’s aunt starts visiting her dead husband in the middle of the night, and Ada’s visions get worse. Make sure you have tissues on hand for the end!

Whidbey by T Kira Madden

T Kira Madden has written a unique and highly compelling story that kept me turning the pages as quickly as possible to find out what happened while also feeling the heartbreak, rage, and helplessness that haunt the story’s characters. The best thing about this book was how nuanced it is while still telling a story that never excuses horrific behavior. She manages to capture the gray in every character, showing us the full range of humanity in both the victim and the perpetrator, as well as the people who love each.
