Thrillers

Yesteryear by Caro Claire Burke

In a time where influencers are more prominent now than ever, you will love this novel that goes behind the scenes of a tradwife named Natalie who finds herself thrust from her Instagramable life into an alternate timeline (pun intended) where she does not fully recognize her family or any aspect of her farmlife. Her carefully curated life is uprooted very suddenly, and you will #lol at Natalie’s plight. This debut novel has a lot of heart, humor, and social commentary, and I expect it to be big. Don’t miss out!

Whidbey by T Kira Madden

T Kira Madden has written a unique and highly compelling story that kept me turning the pages as quickly as possible to find out what happened while also feeling the heartbreak, rage, and helplessness that haunt the story’s characters. The best thing about this book was how nuanced it is while still telling a story that never excuses horrific behavior. She manages to capture the gray in every character, showing us the full range of humanity in both the victim and the perpetrator, as well as the people who love each.

Operation Bounce House by Matt Dinniman

A chilling, darkly humorous, sci-fi thriller with a sharp real-world edge had me turning the pages nonstop. On the newly colonized planet New Sonora, farmer Oliver is fighting to protect his family’s land and legacy. When a mech war machine attacks his property, he learns the truth: back on Earth, a powerful corporation has turned colonist eviction into a televised game, allowing wealthy players to design and remotely pilot deadly mechs for sport. With his fearless sister Lulu, clever farm robots, and a growing resistance, Oliver fights back against invaders who paid top dollar to hunt them; smart, tense, and uncomfortably relevant. I highly recommend!

A Box Full of Darkness by Simone St. James

Simone St. James is the queen of writing supernatural thrillers. This one is told from three siblings’ points of view, and them going back to their home where their brother mysteriously disappeared years ago. It’s time to find out what really happened to him. While reading this, we get snippets about each of the siblings’ lives and how they interconnect, along with how their upbringing led them to where they are now. Their interactions could be humorous, and it was interesting how they each knew a reveal or found something out in a unique way that brought the story to justice. You’ll get the perfect amount of creepiness from this story! If you’ve read any Simone St. James book, you’ll find a ton of Easter eggs and nods to her other books in this one, especially since this one takes place in the same town as the Sundown Motel! Such a fun read that I didn’t want to put down!

A Box Full of Darkness by Simone St. James

Honey, the land!” No spoilers, but Simone St. James has really outdone herself with this twisty supernatural mystery/thriller. Every overturned stone along the plot’s path is captivating, and I never wanted to put it down. I love the sibling dynamics as they return to their haunted childhood home in search of answers regarding their little brother, who went missing at just 6 years old. The Broken Girls may still be my favorite, but this is a very close second.

The First Time I Saw Him by Laura Dave

I was thrilled to see this sequel coming out and Laura Dave absolutely nailed it, once again! We pick up exactly where we left off, and while most sequels spend the first 30 pages or so catching you up to the story, she does not waste our time, and we are thrown right into it. Not to worry, though, I remembered only the bare bones of the first book, and by telling this story on a dual timeline (now and years before), you get caught up bit by bit. Just like the first book, you will be racing through the pages to find out what happens next.

The Weight of Blood by Tiffany D. Jackson

Jackson really gets better with every book! I was hooked from page one on this updated version of Carrie, and I think Stephen King would be proud to have inspired this. Maddy is biracial and outcast from her peers and miserable at home with her abusive father. Racial tensions dividing the town of Springville come to a head on prom night, and the results are…explosive. Do not miss this amazing YA thriller!

Everyone in the Group Chat Dies by L.M. Chilton

Another funny and unputdownable murder mystery/killing spree from the author of Don’t Swipe Right!. Bridget Jones meets I Know What You Did Last Summer in this page-turner about a small British town with a dark past, and the four deadbeat flatmates that get caught up in it when an online sleuth shows up at their door. The hilarious narration from protagonist Kirby is just as entertaining as the mystery itself, which unfolds in a fast-paced dual-timeline format. It’s like Chilton can’t help but write fabulous and unfortunate characters you’re bound to fall in love with!

Book Buzz: Best Offer Wins by Marisa Kashino

Marisa Kashino, photo credit Laura Metzler“There were many moments when I wondered if I was making Margo too despicable. But I hoped that building out her backstory and giving her a wicked sense of humor would generate some empathy and induce readers to stick around. Because yeah, she does some horrible things and has some appalling views, but funny people are usually at least a solid hang! She’s also self-made, having come from humble, somewhat tragic beginnings, which I personally admire about her and hoped others would, too.

The other thing — maybe the most important thing — is that she harbors a constant, boiling rage as a result of the immense pressure she feels as a late-30s woman trying her damnedest to have it all. Creating that part of her character was incredibly cathartic for me”

What booksellers are saying about Best Offer Wins

  • The fact that I was as stressed as Margo was about getting the house of her dreams in this thriller of a novel is telling! Her obsession is off the charts and her determination to get what she wants will stun you.
― Barb Rascon, Page 158 Books in Wake Forest, North Carolina | BUY

  • This takes “cutthroat real estate market” to a whole other level! I can’t believe this is a debut novel- it was expertly executed and alarmingly realistic. Given the right person, you can see how this could all play out, which was maybe the most disturbing part of this psychological thriller!
― Allyn Oliver, The Bluffton Bookshop in Bluffton , South Carolina | BUY
  • Margo is stuck, struggling with this phase of her life. She has goals: get pregnant, buy a house, fall back in love with her husband. These significant life events are intertwined. Her inner dialogue is hilarious and edgy. I admired Margo’s intelligence. She is a serial liar and is devoted to none, other than Fritter, the neighbor’s dog. I am so pleased to recommend this exceptional debut thriller.

  • Meet your new favorite anti-hero, Margot. She’s smart, she’s accomplished, she’s driven … but she’s also stressed and desperate for a forever home, which seems truly impossible in today’s cutthroat housing market in DC. Margot’s monomaniacal for all the trappings of a normal life…maybe because she’s far from normal herself. If you like stories that make you laugh and cringe in equal measure, this is the perfect appalling tale for you!

The Living and the Dead by Christoffer Carlsson

Christoffer Carlsson writes another moody, fast-paced Swedish crime thriller. The time is Christmas Eve 1999, just before Y2K. Police are called to the grisly scene of a wrecked car with the body of a teenager beaten to death in the trunk. The small community has many secrets of passion, envy, and fear, and the police never fully solve the mystery. Then, 20 years later, another murder occurs that seems connected to the first. An edge-of-your-seat mystery that keeps you guessing and an ending that I did not see coming!

The Mad Wife by Megan Church

I mean, all women in the 1950s were hysterical, right? Was she really going mad, or just trying to escape her reality? Lulu was doing her best to keep up with what society and her neighbors thought the perfect housewife should be. But when that picture-perfect life starts to crumble, chillleee… things got real. This wasn’t a jump-scare type of suspense… I felt like it was more of a mental spiral that had me thinking about how many women suffer in silence or get misdiagnosed when something feels off. The themes of mental health, postpartum depression, gaslighting, and just being plain overwhelmed really stood out. It’s a slow burn, but that plot twist definitely threw my book across the room when it hit … ugh, men lol *Note be sure to check in as some of the themes in the book are heavy…take care of yourself, the book can wait

Clown Town by Mick Herron

I loved this book! Clown Town is classic Mick Herron with his evolving cast of Slough House joes. The book collection of a deceased former First Desk is sent to the MI5 library, but there is a book missing, or is it, and is it even a book? And when MI5’s First Desk and a disgraced politician start asking for help, the question becomes who’s playing whom, because “all spies lie.” This fast-paced novel is engaging, surprising, and very well written. Crafted with dry wit and wry comments, this thriller is an absolute pleasure to read. Also, for those needing novel ways to insult their co-workers, look no further than Jackson Lamb – and in this book the invectives are masterful!

Forget Me Not by Stacy Willingham

Stacy Willingham has done it again; she seems to never fail to write a great thriller mystery that will keep you guessing until the end. This one intertwines the past of the main character’s parents’ generation, then her sister, who was murdered 20 years prior to the story, and then the main character, Claire. Claire seems to be following right in the footsteps of her big sister as she returns home to help her mom, but then finds herself working at a vineyard, the same one her sister worked at. There are definitely a lot of secrets hiding at this farm, and her career as a journalist has her wanting to uncover them. The diary she found tucked away in her cabin seems to be the key to solving everything, but the more she learns, the more she should turn around and run, but she doesn’t. Super bingeable, and you will be wondering how often history repeats itself in real life.
